Choosing The Right Dog Chew Bone

Here's some things to consider when choosing a bone that matches your dog's chewing rate and chewing habits:

Size

Some dogs are very particular about the size of the chew bone you give them. Too big and they will not touch it, even though they will chew for hours on a smaller bone. Normally smaller dogs prefer smaller bones but not always to larger dogs prefer large bones. Many bigger dogs won't touch big bones, making their owners wrongly think that chew bones do not interest their dog.  Yet the same rawhide chew bone in a smaller size is chewed immediately.

Hardness and Texture

Besides size, the consistency of the bone you give your dog is another factor to ponder on. Aggressive chewers will chew down a good size bone in an amazingly short period of time. For these kind of dogs try giving pressed rawhide which is compressed. It is harder and will last them longer. The synthetic kind of bones such as Nylabones are also very good choices for a long-lasting chew.

If your dog chews his dog chew bone for short periods of time and has a soft bite then a smaller rawhide bone that is quicker to soften up will be more enjoyable for them. These dogs also enjoy rawhide chips, sticks, or twists. They satisfy the urge to chew and provide just as much entertainment and taste just as good as any of the chew bones.

Flavor

Of course, the flavor is very important to some dogs. Some dogs will like peanut butter-flavored bones while others like their chews hickory-smoke flavored. It is best to just try various types of flavors to see which ones your dog enjoys the most.

Remember, almost all dogs like to chew. The trick is finding the right size, consistency, and flavor your dog wants. Try to find a few types they enjoy. When he loses interest in the one he is working on simply switch to another. This keeps your dog chewing which we all know is great for helping remove plaque and relieving boredom.
