Every Dog Needs A Dog Bed
Dog beds, like cages, provide your dog a sense of security of having a place of their own - a place to get away when they are tired or just need some time alone. Quite often it will become their favorite place in the house. As an added benefit to older dogs, orthopedic beds help maintain their health or comfort dogs who are convalescing.
Living with dogs, you know they tend to select couches, chairs, or beds as a place to rest or sleep. Dogs prefer the comfort and warmth these items offer compared to a hard floor, so who can blame them? Dog beds offer the same comfort benefits as our furniture. Also they keep them off our furniture - an important point for many dog owners who would rather to keep their furniture free from pet hair. The earlier a bed is introduced with reinforcement of consistent training, the more likely it will keep your dog off your furniture.
Many dog beds contain cedar chips. Cedar has a natural flea repellent that will help prevent infestation of your dog, besides lending a nice aroma. Look for beds with a zippered inner liner so you can add fresh cedar or more filling when needed. Those with zippered outer liners allow for easy removal and machine washing.
Should your dog develop joint problems, is a particularly large breed or is overweight, or when age brings on conditions like arthritis, consider an orthopedic bed with orthopedic foam to provide the support they need while helping to relieve pain and discomfort.
Where you place your dog's bed is entirely up to you and your dog. Just remember it is their resting place so it would be best not to place it in a high traffic area. Many dog owners place their pet's bed in their cage or crate once it is house trained. Some prefer a location near where they spend much of their time so their faithful companion is always nearby. There are a wide selection of styles and color choices that enable you to choose a bed and changeable cover that complements your home decor.
